QoS or CoS : improve the performance
of your applications
Capitalize on control mecanisms in order to improve your application performance
In a previous release dedicated to WAN (Wide Area Network) optimization, we were mentioning that WAN networks keep changing and that CIOs must be able to anticipate such changes in order to maintain a performance level acceptable for users.
As we precised, control mecanisms such as QoS (Quality of Service) or CoS (Class of Service) can be used for controlling and prioritizing applications on a wide area network. This herein new release allows us to take a closer look at WAN optimization.
Regardless of having in mind as permanent concern, the encountered problems or the WAN architecture, two approaches are equally possible:
- QoS
- CoS
Nowadays, contrary to what some might still think, to increase bandwidth is not anymore the only way to get a good network performance.
Indeed, to increase bandwidth is pricy and may eventually harm WAN performance (the more bandwidth there is, the more parasite traffic there will be). This solution masks the problem instead of solving it.
A new and efficient solution consists of controlling and restraining traffic labelled as non-priority. Thus, bandwidth does not have to be increased for business traffic. In other words, we make sure that non-priority traffic do not affect business traffic.
QoS approach
QoS aims to guarantee dynamically and in real time that each session of applications used on network does have enough bandwidth to work in an optimum way.
Elsewhere, thanks to buffer mecanisms, QoS permits to avoid reaching the critical threshold of link congestion that is generally expressed by packet suppression hence causing application slowdown.
CoS approach
QoS and CoS both allow to control traffic on network but they are very different tehnologies.
Indeed, CoS is based on wait queue mecanisms. CoS allows to manage traffic on a network by gathering similar flows in classes. Each class is alloted a different priority level. Since this mecanism is based on a single static bandwidth reservation (usually a percentage of the link speed), it is important to note that CoS rules must be adapted to each type of network site.
In short, benefits from control mecanisms are the following:
- Network performance and enterprise’s productivity are improved;
- Complaints from users stop for users are satisfied;
- Costs related to WAN are reduced for it is no more necessary to increase bandwidth.
e-Qual is able to position itself on QoS technology and on CoS technology.
